Water is one of earth’s most precious commodities, and the 15,000 inhabitants of the Hafto region know this well. Surrounded by broken hand pumps and dry wells, the people experienced medical problems and hygienic issues, until Mulugeta Sedoro stepped in. As chairperson of SMART (Sustainable Management of Alternative and Renewable Technologies), Sedoro worked in conjunction with Oliver Kopsch and the Antonia Ruut Foundation to create a community fountain. Charged by solar energy, the kiosk provides an inexhaustible supply of water for villagers. For a small fee, the people can acquire clean water and even charge their cell phones. The result is a sustainable practice that saves time, produces clean energy, and provides hope for Hafto's future.
