A film by HooplaHa.

Cesar Cruz is not your typical Harvard student. The married father-of-three already had 19 years of teaching experience, and worked as dean of students at RISE High in Oakland, Calif. Applying to Harvard’s graduate program seemed like an out-of-reach ambition. However, Harvard accepted Cruz into its Doctoral Program for Educational Leadership — one of 25 applicants accepted each year. Cruz, who started the Homies Empowerment Program to prevent gang violence, dreams of utilizing his higher education to acquire funding to open an after-school center. His goal is to create a safe haven for kids away from gangs and drugs and towards a pursuit of greater goals, such as education.
