At the age of 12, Pamela Hawley witnessed extreme poverty in Mexico. This experience grew into a lifelong commitment to service through social entrepreneurship. In 2002, Hawley created a website, Universal Giving, that facilitates people to donate and volunteer in vetted development programs around the world. With the click of a button, anyone can donate to help provide school supplies in Central America, build houses for the poor in Africa, run literacy projects in the Philippines, or choose among many other projects that provides basic needs for a community. To date, her team has raised a whopping $1.5 billion through their unique model of assistance without taking any share of the donations raised through their site. Pamela Hawley has been honored with the Jefferson Award for Public Service, as well as selected as a finalist in Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year Award." Hawley's mantra: "Create a world where giving and volunteering are a natural part of everyone's everyday life."
