In this call to global action in the name of corporate transparency, anti-corruption activist and co-founder of the NGO Global Witness Charmian Gooch, describes the damaging effects of an alarming, globally pervasive, yet elusive phenomenon: anonymous companies. Through several significant examples and a description of how anonymous companies are organized, Gooch reveals a troubling inconsistency: despite having contributed to wars, government corruption, the destruction of natural resources, and large-scale public dispossession, anonymous companies remain legal and can be easily created. Yet, Gooch also describes the many impactful ways in which Global Witness, other campaign groups, and governments have begun to generate momentum in the movement to end anonymous companies, start a conversation about the moral parameters of corporate agents, and rewrite the laws that govern them. As unsettling as Gooch’s findings are, Gooch also shows us that “change really is possible.”
