Somos Tuskaloosa is a volunteer group that came together in 2011 in the aftermath of a tornado that destroyed 7,200 homes and businesses in a largely Latino community, and with the passage of an anti-immigration bill (Alabama HB56) - one of the most regressive in the U.S. Community members have come together to push back against discrimination, fight for immigrant justice, and provide support for Latino families to rebuild their lives in Tuscaloosa. In 2013, Somos Tuskaloosa was one of four winners of the Torchlight Prize for their success in working together to create positive change in their community. "We are Tuskaloosa."
