For 15 years, Patrick Otema had no voice. Born deaf, Patrick lived in a remote region of Uganda, where there were no schools for people with deafness. He communicated with his family using basic gestures and signs, but otherwise, Patrick remained alone, in silence. Then hope arrived in the form of Raymond Okkelo, a sign language teacher who is also deaf. Returning to his village, Okkelo created a school for the Deaf so students like Patrick can leave behind the silence and enter a world that wants to give them a voice.
