The importance of co-existence between humans and wildlife is a point of focus for Dr. Laly Lichtenfeld, a conservation biologist. In northern Tanzania, villagers in the Maasai region face the threat of wildlife, such as lions, attacking their livestock. In turn, villagers fight back against these big cats by killing them. Desiring to protect both lions and the villagers’ livelihood, Dr. Lichtenfeld installs sturdy chain link fences attached to growing trees — a living wall. The trees and fence stop lions from going into the boma, or family plot. In protecting both the interests of the people and the lions, Dr. Lichtenfeld’s efforts assist in changing attitudes by allowing for a peaceful synchronicity and a respect for every living creature in its particular habitat.
