Meet the Chico Mendes Reforestation Project of Pachaj, Guatemala, founded and directed by Armando Lopez. Not more than a well-meaning, lighthearted, and small-scale undertaking at first, the project has grown into a thriving community program educating village youth and connecting with the international community in its efforts to teach young people how to respect, care for, and maintain the Earth and her resources. In doing so, the Chico Mendes Reforestation Project passes down a generations-old appreciation of the region’s forest as both a source of life and as a legacy that must continue to be passed down; a mission that makes itself felt as a call to all of us to individually and collectively take responsibility for the planet that sustains us and is our future.
