Workshop Houston operates in Houston's Third Ward, where one in four families live below the poverty line. Through its four different "Shops," Workshop Houston provides tools and resources that kids can use immediately to gain skills and confidence to pursue future studies or work. Co-Director Reginald Hatter left a higher paying job and lived in an abandoned building for eight months so that he could devote his energies to the children and youth he saw in pain from the lack of a responsible, caring adult. As Bass Heavy, the Coordinator of the Beat Shop says, 70% of his role is "just being there."
