Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.Teach a child to read and you open up a world of full of wonder and amazing possibilities. Baco, a fisherman from the Rinca Island of Indonesia, spends his days fishing to feed himself and his community. Then forgoes sleep and has created a dedicated library space in his humble home so that children can feed their curiosity and learn of a world beyond their village. 5 years ago he was asked to host a library in his home. With his acceptance of this request, he has given scores of children the gift of literacy and reading. Baco sacrifices sleep so that children can learn to feed their minds for a lifetime. and become active participants in making our global society a better place.

  • Learn about the children’s literacy effort for which Boca volunteers. Reading Rainbow Gardens has distributed over 20,000 books and built 26 children's libraries across 11 islands in Indonesia.
  • Reflect on the many ways that literacy has benefited your quality of life. Be the change and give this gift back to the universe by making a commitment to help at least 1 other person learn to read through a literacy volunteer program.
  • Organize friends, community, social club or co-workers to donate their gently used books and magazines to the literacy effort of their choice. Have fun and organize this around a donation challenge or casual social event such as a potluck dinner.
