Lori Weise had a desire to help animals and the people who love them. While working at a furniture factory on Skid Row 20 years ago she met many pet owners who were homeless and saw that they needed help. What started as a practice of befriending people and offering aid grew into Downtown Dog Rescue (DDR), which reaches out to people who love their pets but need assistance in providing for them or otherwise risk losing them. Local shelters contact DDR when people come in to surrender their pets. DDR attempts to intervene by offering free spay and neuter services, vaccines, dog food, medical services, and even a kennel for those who need temporary housing for their pet. They give people the chance to continue to receive the unconditional love that comes from having a canine companion while also continuing to provide love for their pet, with both reaping immense benefits.
