The Inner Resilience Program (IRP) was founded in 2001 in reaction to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. At the time, the program was focused on the needs of eleven public schools in lower Manhattan, where children were reeling from the upheaval experienced by their community. IRP taught children, teachers, and parents mindfulness, relaxation exercises, and social and emotional learning techniques. Over the years it became clear that the skills being taught to these students were needed all over the country. The program now focuses more on wellness and less on trauma recovery. Here members of the Chatsworth Elementary School community explain what the IRP Contemplative Education Initiative has meant to them, and the dramatic impact it has had on their lives.
