Cattle are part of the creation myth of the Maasai in Kenya. The Maasai depend on them for food and their livelihood. Young boys of a certain age are given the responsibility to herd the family's cattle. For Richard Turere, whose family lived near Nairobi National Park, lions from the Park were causing a major problem, killing cattle at night. Turere set out to try to prevent this. After many failed attempts, from scarecrows to torches, he came up with his invention, “lion lights.” As it turns out, lions are afraid of moving light. “Lion lights” are solar-powered flashing lights that make it appear as though a person is standing guard. Richard is working to get these lights set up across his village to help keep the peace between the villagers, their cattle, and lions.
