Twenty children between the ages of 5 and 7 in the U.K. were asked to draw a fighter pilot, surgeon and fire fighter. This video captures the reality of gender stereotyping among school children, and how early on in their education, children already define jobs as male and female. 66 pictures were drawn, with 61 pictures of men. Watch the surprise and delight of the children when a real-life fighter pilot, surgeon and fire fighter are revealed to the class.

I like that the children we first let to express their thoughts then shifted towards breaking the barrier.

i commend the team that created this moment with the world and hats off to the teachers who continue to bring these lessons to the classrooms. I am inspired to do the same in my sunday school classroom. My grandchildren are between ages 5 and 16. All 5 are learning that inclusion and breaking down barriers is what will make a strong and accepting community.I would love to see this repeated using other jobs, ballet dancer, plumber, florist, etc. Thank you.

A comment I made elsewhere a couple of years ago: My granddaughter is 20 months old (as of April 2014). I have spent a lot of time with her at her home, feeding her, burping her, rocking her to sleep (pure heaven!), and playing with her on the floor. She has more toys than I can count. Many if not most of them have speaking or singing voices. All the voices except one (Sesame Street's My First Story Reader) are female. What message does that inculcate in baby boys starting at almost infancy? What does it tell grown men about their inclusion in the world of children -- even as they are ordered to get out of the way of women's inclusion in the world of work? Here are some of my granddaughter's favorite speaking and singing toys, all of which are gender neutral but feature female voices only: VTECH Rhyme & Discover Book VTECH Tiny Touch Phone Fisher-Price Laugh & Learnâ„¢ Love to Play Puppyâ„¢ Fisher-Price Smart Screen Laptop VTECH 3-in-1 Smart Wheel VTECH Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker

The way this will hopefully enable more people to fulfill more of their potential. We cannot afford the wasted potential of gender barriers and mass unemployment and under employment...mallender employment even.

To be truly balanced, this video would have to include imagery of fathers taking primacy in parenting and women initiating sex, paying men's way and risking their lives to protect the lives of men. It would have to show also stereotypes of men as hard/hazardous laborers, coalminers, POWs and so on. Rather than simply aggrandize firefighters, it would need to admit that 99% are, in fact, male---many of whom wind up burnt, disfigured, and die young breathing toxic fumes---all of which may indicate something more than pure "male privilege." When female issues and inequities are presented as stand-alone and unique (rather than mirrored by male issues and inequities), we're invited to empathize with and take action on behalf of women only. Moreover, we're invited to view men as over-privileged, the enemies of equality. Note that this video, itself, depicts the true female domination in schools and how that empowers women to teach children of both sexes their female/feminist view of gender reality as if it were gender reality in its entirety. Could that be a female abuse of power? to me, more than anything, this video demonstrates how far we yet have to go to replace "female-ism" with equalism---a new gender-neutral gender politics.

Absolutely brilliant way to teach these young girls a new and real and balanced way of thinking about their futures. Thankyou very much for this.

It was BRILLIANT! I cried with joy while watching it. I am quite gender liberated, but grew up within a family and cultural system that was terribly biased. It was inhibiting and diminishing for me to say the least! So much extreme gender bias is practiced around the world right now. Keep up the good work of revealing early conditioning. It would be valuable to do the same process in a working class school/neighborhood. I'd love to see those results.

I love this and would love to challenge more children to think differently.

Gender inequality is around the world especially in India n the Arab States. This experiment is amazingly true n must spread all over the world very soon.

Everything here was activity-based, rather then "telling" these kids what to think. They came to their own knowing, which is much more powerful. That's the way all of us need to learn about our own biases. The looks on these kids' faces says it all. And, of course, this is a wonderful message about any of us being able to do anything! Thank you for all of that!

First of all, thank you for the eye reopening video. It really opened my thought to thought that we turn to judgment at such a vulnerable age. It also made me wonder at what age many of us put the preconceived notions in our consciousness that we somehow are inferior and lack all ability to be great when the truth is that everyone one of us has that amazing ability right at are fingertips if we would just be willing to close out the feelings of what we see and open our hearts to all that is truly possible.
