It’s when everything is taken away that it can feel easiest to surrender. Yet smiles fill this story of the Abucay Bunkhouse Youth Organisation, a support group and movement started by Vanessa, a 14 year-old survivor of Typhooon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines in 2013. By creating a space to gather, create art, and connect with one another, the young people of Tacloban City create a space of healing and regeneration. With nothing to lose and everything to offer, the young people of Tacloban City demonstrate that it’s when everything is taken away that life offers itself up again as something to embrace. “Because,” as Vanessa says, “you still have to fulfill your mission in this life.”
