“I could see plastics, and plastics, and plastics…” This was the sight to which Afroz Shah awoke day after day upon opening his balcony windows to look out onto Versova Beach in Mumbai. But one day, prompted to act and pushing aside the feeling of not knowing what to do, Afroz put on a pair of gloves and started gathering trash. Soon after, he was joined by hundreds of people. News of the effort spreading via social media and grew into the world’s largest beach cleaning project, serving as a model for both environmental and social advocacy groups. An inspiring account of what a single will can put in action, the story of Versova Beach is also a wake-up call about the urgent need for action and for a re-visioning of our horizons of possibility.
