Today, the James River is considered one of the finest urban wilderness parks in the United States. The tree canopy lining the river cleans the air for all species, human and non-human, who live nearby. The waters and vegetation house rich wildlife. And the banks offer beauty, refuge, and peace for many Richmond, Virginia residents. But at one point, the James River was listed as the fifth dirtiest river in the world.
