It’s easy to accept people from different backgrounds when they don’t live right next door and when community members tend to have everything they need. Upi is a small province in the south Philippines, divided into 23 barangays (or neighborhoods) and three religions, each with its own procedures for handling conflicts. With 65% of its citizens living below the poverty level it was doubly important for society members to find ways to help one another, and to avoid putting much needed resources into rivalries and violence. In 2001 the mayor of Upi began the Tri People way of conflict resolution, providing a way for inhabitants to have a voice, for congregations to settle disputes, and for the area to find peace.
