Following a directive by the Indian government in 2001, all schools in India now provide free lunches to primary school students. However, some have taken this concept further. In the state of Karnataka, for instance, free lunches are offered to all students upto the 10th grade and are also used as an instrument for the cause of social equality. Through collaborations with organizations such as "Hare Krishna", India's mid-day meal scheme has become a model of how technology can be used to solve the nutritional problems faced by poor children.
