Evelyn (no last name given) was 97 when her driver's license was taken away from her for no other reason than her age. So, at age 98, she decided to get it back in order to fulfill a promise to a neighbor to get her to the grocery store once a week after their retirement community's bus service was discontinued. "When you make a promise, it's important for me to keep that promise if it's possible. I'm on the earth, I'm here. If I can contribute, I should. Shouldn't we all? And not just think of ourselves? I don't have money to give, but I can give myself."

Peggie What a great example of Psalm 92:14 "Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green." That's my goal as well. She is such an inspiration!

I am 77 and many times feel I have lived enough. But after seeing this video, I felt rejuvenated and felt I need to live more to uplift the spirits of my age group. Thank you for this infusion.

  • Barbara

What a cool lady!! I would love to meet her; I wish I lived near her. One of my uncles lived to 101 (at least) - his 100th birthday party brought family from all over the U.S. together. He also gave back: continued driving well into his 90's and volunteered at a local hospital on a regular schedule. He lived in and maintained the home in which my cousins were raised until he was at least 96, maybe longer. Evelyn reminds me of him. I wish her good health and many more happy, productive years!

Evelyn's attitude to give and go forward, without rancor about her license being taken, but not letting that be the final word for her.

  • " Twinkle "

It gives me the will to carry on. I am 74 this month and get a tad bit tired of people asking me my age. I love her line " I like being …. " That's a kewl idea. I am going to paint my toes nails today …. thanks to her.( I NO longer think I am too old to do that. LOL.) I volunteer at a Women's Transition House where I do baking and inspire the women and children. I believe everyone should help others in one way or another. It's a huge vitamin pill for all. Blessings to everyone !!! ~~~ I notice she laughs alot and that too keeps her going and going. God Bless her. I think she will see a number of good years yet !!!! Love " Twinkle "

It is important for each of us to find purpose in our lives. Generosity and gratitude are great partners in healthy living. Evelyn is a role model for good neighboring. I would love to have her as a neighbor to cheer along her efforts.

What a great grand old lady. Evelyn has proved that she is old in age but young in mind, with full of enthusiasm. May you live long Evelyn. God Bless you.

  • Neil

Great attitude, although I'm not sure I would want a 98 year old driving on roads near me. What is her reaction time like? What is her eye sight like?

  • Ramesh Shah

I LOVE this story because I'm 78 and looking for ways to HELP & CONTRIBUTE. Everybody can DO this with Pro-active attitude and plan.DO NOT give UP; PERSIST AND BE TENACIOUS to pursue your dream.

  • Carol

Evelyn has such a great sense of purpose….to love her neighbor…literally…she demonstrates that by her determination to regain her driver's license so that she can be her neighbor's chauffeur! What a friend! Her age is irrelevant to her…her life has meaning simply because she can contribute to the greater good. Awesome woman! Thanks Evelyn!

She has a very good thought process...what we think is what we get. Maybe life is not a bowl of cherries, but mangos are good too. Lets keep on keeping on, that's what I'm saying at 73.

  • Barbara

That final sentence....I am claiming it for myself, even though I am only 72.

  • Brian

Thanks Guys...Viva Evelyn!!! Be encouraged in U...peace thru People....

  • Hemal S

Evelyn is amazing and so is her spirit. What struck me most was - how many times do we pause (figuratively) to think about an old person that I just passed, hurrying on my way, either on the road, or in the store and other such places. We are in such a rat race world that we almost become oblivious to them.

  • Frank Rommey

Society cannot legislate when we are old enough to become useless... It is our spirit keeping its promises who does that...

The JOY of GIVING is so natural and pure to Evelyn but on the other hand how we have restricted ourselves ... Hats off to Evelyn at 98, where there is will there is a Evelyn way...

  • Annette

I just turned 58 a few days ago and I seem to obsess about getting older and death.....have been since my mother died about 10 yrs ago. This video inspired me. Evelyn is a beautiful person inside and out and a great role model. Thanks for this. Makes me grateful.

  • Annamarie

Love the video, good on you, go get what you deserve girl, I love you. We do not feel our age, as eveyone talks about. We are simply who we are that never changes, no matter how many years we tick off.

  • Brenda

Evelyn's fabulous laugh and generous, can-do spirit!

  • Polly

Thank you for defeating stereotypes! We need options and more options for our elders!

  • zana

So inspirational in many ways. This story made my day. Enjoy your life Evelyn, you are my hero!

  • Mary

I'm 85, still perky and capable of driving, but my children worry about me and are beginning to take over my "chores and tasks". I don't mind most of it, (happy to be lazy) and I am careful about where I choose to drive .... to my gold-Zumba class, and my sketching class at the community center, to my friends' homes (their cooking tastes better than mine); the library, market, movies, theatre, etc. I did scratch my fender against the stone wall while backing out of my friend's apartment dwelling (it was narrow and I should have had guidance in maneuvering down the narrow driveway), but other than that, I'm quite a safe driver and passed my vision test. My memory test was passed with flying colors. So, I intend to drive until 90, but if Evelyn was still capable at 98, perhaps I'll live that long and be like Evelyn...useful with a sense of humor and grace.

  • Prajna

Thank you again, KarmaTube. I'm turning 70 and Evelyn's story really touched me. How wonderful it would be if I had 28 more years to keep giving!

  • Val Branch

That people 98 still have their ability to drive. My mother is going on 97 and still drives. She can see well and has good reflexes (and, of course, lots of driving experience) and has a perfect driving record. She would also be devastated if she could no longer drive herself and others around town.
