In 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression in the US, President Roosevelt initiated the nationwide Works Progress Administration (WPA). With the unemployment rate at 25% and people living on the streets in countless numbers, the WPA put people to work creating buildings, bridges, monuments, art installations and gardens all across the country. President Roosevelt understood that people would find hope and meaning in working at jobs that turned a bad situation into something good. Many of the hundreds of projects were simply ways to make communities more beautiful through the arts. This short musical film celebrates the Berkeley Rose Garden, built by the WPA in the 1930s. It continues to this day nearly 100 years later as a living, vital community space where children come to run on the terraces, musicians play, and butterflies find a resting place.

EIE….let the flowers grow, however, do not be fooled by the political distractions of growing a simple rose.

I grew up near the Rose Garden, this video was so nostalgic and sweet, I remember running through the rows of roses and the tunnel exactly like the girls in the video. Thank you for putting it together.

Thank you for this lovely memory of where I grew up, got married, played, and grieved. And the message is wonderful about public works- fantastic way to spread that message.

What a remarkable history told in a song, and visuals. We need another WPA for 2025 as the unemployment rate again is rising under this administration. Maybe this video should be sent to the current President. I loved the diversity too in this video, the young, the mature persons, the many cultures, and of course the beauty of the garden itself. Thank you for this video, as it gave me hope.
