Sunday, October 2 marks both the United Nations' International Day of Non-Violence and the birthday of one of its biggest proponents: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. This week we pay tribute to the concept and the man by re-introducing our subscribers to the "Power of One." We honor the values and practice of the nonviolent civil actions that changed a nation -- and indeed, the world.

Each and every person has the capability to do something small to inspire others. Change yourself to do something kind, thoughtful, or morally right and others will follow. Small changes can lead to larger inner spirit and self worth to do the right by yourself, as well as others.

It goes along with what progressive anthropologist Margaret Mead said years ago: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." ~ Namaste

it seems so daunting to live up to the example of these amazing people! however, once i take a step back and remind myself that they are just people, doing something they believe in: it doesn't seem so scary to imagine that i could do something too!

I am already inspired so I showed the video with some quotes of Gandhi to point heads in the right directions to raise awareness and consciousness that power exist in each one of us. Power of One! ~ I share his thoughts of wonder ~ Hello from Heaven When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator. ~ Mohandas Gandhi What is true of the individual will be tomorrow true of the whole nation if individuals will but refuse to lose heart and hope. ~ Mohandas Gandhi You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. ~ Mohandas Gandhi What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy? ~ Mohandas Gandhi You must be the change you wish to see in the world. ~ Mohandas Gandhi BELOVED Gandhi, you will never die, your soul will live forever. ~ x ~

This video captured so many different causes, highlighting each time how one person made a difference. If anyone reading these comments would be willing to RT or share this link, you could make a difference in one child's life forever - perhaps she will go on someday to be somebody's "power of one": http://waytenmom.blogspot.com/2011/08/hope-for-family-carlas-family.html Thanks!

That I am not alone in my quest to help people become conscious thinking human beings, not just humans doing. The masters of this type of thinking has changed the world so lets pick up where they left in a conscious now thinking movement....Windwalker

If you think what you do doesn't matter, think twice, because it does! People who do great things usually don't know they are doing great things and making changes. They just do them because it is the right thing to do. That is what makes it great. The selflessness.

Powerful. Inspiring. Astronomical. ONE star at a time to form the Galaxy of the Earth Community. Hermano Carlos, it was very nice to see you at the Oak Grove (last July) when the police tried to extract our beloved satyagrahis from the trees. The bright eyes of your beautiful 2 year-old son, right there in the middle of the structural violence of the University of California, that strong light, brings to mind the nonviolent (love in action) teachings of Gandhi. The Chipko movement, Julia Butterfly, and the longest urban treesit ever recorded, are evidences of the new relationships we are creating with Mother Nature. Rather than "hypocritical environmental issues" I see them as ways to defend the voiceless... like your son, and your grandson, and the grandson of your grandson... all of them whispering in our dreams: what are you doing to protect our beloved home, the Earth? It's not only about saving a few trees, but to challenge the lack of imagination of the institutions of the Empire. From sowing the seeds of restorative justice, strong sequoias of light will grow to illuminate the path of peace towards a healthy Earth Community. Hermano Carlos, no community can exist without a unifying story, and your family is part of the Berkeley community. Your critical lens is always welcomed. We have been working on your dreams... If you want to be a rebel, be kind. Human-kind, be both.

Hey you rememebr that mexican woman who was deported in Chicago and whose son (American citizen) was unable to do anything for preventing his mother to be kidnapped by the ICE. Typical of american and amateur activist that care more about the hipocritical environmental issues (like the trees in Berkeley) than relating rosa parks struggle and Ghandi’s ideals to the current state of aparhedi reinfopcred by all you documented people in the US, or to the fact that today the federal government is in the bussiness of disapering people or murdering with rockets then placing their face in the NY times as a war trophy. Shame on you guys, for allowing this aparhedi system and bennefititng from it and talking about envirnmental issues that do not relate to the opression of more than 12 million poelpe in side the US. when you make a video connecting Ghandi and the civil rights movement to the need for legal equality for workers in the US then you can e mail me again.

wow. just wow. Who was the girl that wanted to go to the same school as everyone else?

  • P.Stephen Raj

A young girl speaking out her woes at the UN is worth applauding, bravo, keep it up. At the same time such values are not consistent, it will go down the drain with the passage of time. Be it politicians of any specific country or world renowned leaders all think and work in the same manner-for themselves, not for the common issues.
