Timor Leste (East Timor) is one of the poorest countries in Asia. On Atauro Island, where most people work as subsistence farmers or fishermen, a group of women set up a sewing co-operative called Boneca de Atauro. UK-based social enterprise, Swags World (Simply Women and Girls in a Sustainable World), partnered with Boneca de Atauro to open up new, responsible markets for the co-operative, co-creating a new design for a product that the local women had already been making - a product with a story. In the process, they not only created economic value for the product, but maintained cultural, creative, and social values important to the women of Atauro Island.
