185 voices. 243 tracks. 12 countries. A choir unlike any other. What started as a simple social media experiment, has become a poetic metaphor of our shared humanity and the power of connection.

Acclaimed composer and conductor Eric Whitacre offered the sheet music of his original composition, "Lux Aurumque", as a free download and invited singers to submit a video of themselves performing one part (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass). These rather ordinary videos of solo performances were then pieced together to form a choir of singers who have never met each other...but have unwittingly created music in perfect harmony together.

This brought me to tears. Thank you, Eric, for your inspiring music and to everyone involved who brought this moving project through to completion. This so beautifully illustrates our interconnectivity and how harmony IS possible - and deeply yearned for. Music, especially as beautiful as this piece, is such a powerful means of sharing and connecting. How large might the next choir be? I'm joining those spreading this video. Thank you, karmatube.org for finding it. What a start to the day!

It occurred to me after listening to the gorgeous harmony created here, that perhaps this video should be played for the world leaders that hold humanities fate in their hands. Or, maybe starting in the United States, we should add "In each other we trust", to our currency. har.mo.ny (har'me-nE) n. pl. .nies 1. Accord or agreement in feeling, manner, action, etc.: to live in harmony. 2. A state of order, agreement, or esthetically pleasing relationships among the elements of the whole: the harmony of color in a painting. 3. Pleasing sounds; music. 4. Music a) A simultaneous combination of tones or a group of melodic tones that suggest a simultaneous combination. , etc.

On a regular basis, I am asked by my students what does it matter if I am working for justice here in my little sphere of influence (my classroom, my family or friendship circle, my workplace). Social injustice is so pervasive, structural, and seemingly endless. What I found so inspiring about this piece is how it captures the collective effect when individual people work towards a common goal - even when that work is seemingly done in isolation. Thanks for posting!

  • Sharon
