Malala Yousafzai was already well-known, if anonymously, in the West as the author of the compelling BBC blog describing life as a school girl in northwest Pakistan's Swat Valley. She was catapulted to international fame by a failed assassination attempt by the Taliban and has since become the global face of the right of girls to enjoy the same educational and life opportunities as boys receive. At only 16 years of age, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize in 2013. In this interview with Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, Malala displays both her passion for the struggle for gender equality and her compassion for those who would do her harm.

the statement she made that she wanted to hit a Taliban with a shoe...then realizing her action would be as violent as them....then saying her hope for Taliban would be for them to be educated as is her goal for herself...

Wow! What a courageous and graceful young woman. She embodies a clear message of compassion and hope for girls and even boys. I can't wait to share this video with my grandpa, who left Pakistan during 1947 and is a strong proponent of education.

Such clarity and such commitment at so young an age.Only when the gender barrier is overcome will women be free to achieve their full potential.Their struggle will be long and hard because they pose an existential challenge to the forces of dogma who are caught in a time warp. Unless the message of live and let live underpins every aspect of our life,Malalas of this world will be under threat. Bravo brave girl.May you go from strength to strength and hold aloft the light of education and attendant empowerment!!
